IIT Kanpur to restrict Net access round the clock

Kanpur: To prevent suicide attempts and misuse of internet facilities the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K), authorities may put restriction on round-the-clock internet access.

So, that the students who often fail to do well in exams or either sleeps in class rooms and misses classes can focus on their studies. Their failure to keep pace with their studies led to the suicides.

Since, 2005 seven students of the college have taken their lives. The most recent case was a 22-year-old Madhuri Sale, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room yesterday.

However, the decision to unplug the Wi-Fi internet services at the campus after midnight can only be taken after being cleared by the IIT senate.

At present, around five thousand students have round-the- clock access to Internet in their hostel through Wi-Fi. But if the proposal is accepted, the internet access will be shut down from midnight to 8 am.
