New Delhi: Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, has announced its plans to open its first non-US office in India. However, it is not yet decided in which city they would be opening their office.
Wikimedia co-founder Jimmy Wales said, “If Wikipedia was a country, it would be one of the largest tourist centres in the world.”
Since its creation in 2001, it has grown rapidly and attracted millions of visitors. There are more than 91,000 active members working on millions of articles in different languages.
Currently, Wikipedia receives 402 million unique visitors per day and now with this project they want to extend there reach to 80 % of the Indian population, using top 10 Indian languages.
Wales added “As a media project, for me India was the perfect place because we wish to work with a variety of people and India has a lot of communities.”
He said further, “The community in India should lead and Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) will follow them.”
