The Taj Mahal will collapse in less than five years unless urgent action is taken by the Government of India to fix its rotting foundations. According to campaigners the foundation 358-year-old marble mausoleum has become brittle and are disintegrating.
The Taj Mahal is India’s most popular tourist attraction which brings more than four million tourist to Agra every year. It was built by Mogul emperor Shah Jahan in 1631, who was grief-stricken over the death of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal during the birth of their 14th child Gauhara Begam.
A group of environmentalists, historians and politicians say that time is running out to prevent a looming crisis to Taj Mahal.
According to a historian, Professor Ram Nath Taj Mahal stands just next to the river Yamuna which has now dried up and if the river dies, the Taj cannot survive. Since, the river is a constituent of its architectural design.
